Dubai, the new hotspot for Mollywood movies?

Dubai seems to be new favourite locale for family flicks in Mollywood. After Nivin Pauly’s Jacobinte Swargarajyam and Dileep’s King Liar, we hear that Prithviraj’s next with Babu Janardhanan will also have an extensive schedule shot in the city in the United Arab Emirates. Director Babu Janardhanan tells us, “It’s a triangular love story and we are hoping to head to Uae after September, once the heat comes down and winter starts to kick in.” Incidentally, the latest films which had Dubai as its primary location, have a family story at its core and Babu Janardhanan says his film will be no different. We look at the other such films shot in Dubai in the last few years:

Diamond Necklace Lal Jose is known for showing off Dubai’s visuals and telling tales of expatriates with movies like Arabikatha. However, Diamond Necklace starring Fahadh Faasil showed off the high-flying lifestyle enjoyed by the youngsters. It was also the first Indian movie to be filmed in Burj Khalifa.
Jacobinte Swargarajyam The movie based on a real-life story that transpired during the 2008 recession had an extensive schedule, with most of Dubai captured through the eyes of its characters.
King Liar =The Siddique-Lal movie showed off the fashion scene in Uae. While some of the ramp scenes were canned in Kochi, the movie showed the elite life that Dubai residents enjoy and also had locales at a popular international airline company.
Madhura Naranga The Sugeeth directorial was another story based on real-life incidents about two Malayali taxi drivers — played by Kunchacko Boban and Biju Menon — who help a Sri Lankan girl escape to her country. Parvathy Ratheesh made her debut with the movie.
